CBoTB- Black Flag Brewing Co. Betwixt

I wanted to venture out of my comfort zone this week and try a type of beer that I don’t have a ton of experience with. So, I went to the liquor store down the street from the station here in Hunt Valley and asked them to recommend a stout. They turned me on to Black Flag Brewing Company’s Betwixt. It’s a chocolate caramel cookie imperial stout that, as the name would suggest, is supposed to taste like a Twix candy bar.

What sold me on trying this beer was that it was a collaboration between Black Flag Brewing in Columbia, Maryland, and Four Score Beer Company based out of Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. I was told that Four Score makes great beer, but it is almost never available in Maryland so I felt like I had to try this while I could.

This beer is RICH, and definitely checks a lot of the boxes of a traditional stout. It’s very dark, with a hint of chocolate on the nose. I didn’t really get the taste of caramel that the name gave the impression of, but the chocolate taste is definitely there with a very creamy mouthfeel and if you’re a fan of stouts you’ll most likely enjoy this beer. I think I may need to spend some more time with it to get used to the taste since stouts are very outside my usual purview. But that’s what’s fun about this whole journey…finding new things, trying them, keeping an open mind and revisiting them later on to see how your opinions and palate change.
