CBoTB: Nugget Nectar from Troeg’s Independent Brewing

Well, here we are in the dead of winter with sub-freezing temperatures, bitter cold winds, and snow in the forecast.  So how do we stay warm?  Extra layers of clothing, turn the heat up a little, have a fire in the fireplace, and… drink a cold beer that’ll warm us up!

Every January, Troeg’s Independent Brewing releases an Imperial Amber Ale that’ll do just that: warm you up… and give you a chance to celebrate one of the many good things in life.  Troeg’s Nugget Nectar has been a January treat since 2004.  Back then, the idea of creating a radically different beer was new and adventurous.  But Troeg’s Independent Brewing has always had exploring the new and being adventurous as core principals to the company.

I got together with Troeg’s Co-Founders, brothers Chris and John Trogner, to talk about this very special beer.  Co-Founder and Brewmaster John Trogner takes us back to when Nugget Nectar’s recipe was created.

This year’s Nugget Nectar features the Nugget and Simcoe hops that were part of that first brew along with Tomahawk, Palisade and Warrior hops.  Last weekend, I picked up some Nugget Nectar and after chilling a few bottles, had my first Nugget Nectar of 2021.

The beer pours a rich, dark orange and is beautifully clear.  The head is white and thick, but not dense.  The aroma reveals both grapefruit and pine notes and the flavor features grapefruit and pine on the first taste with soft mango sweetness on the finish.  This is a spectacular beer!

There’s only one problem with Troeg’s Nugget Nectar: it’s so good and is so anticipated that it sells out fast—every year!  So look for it this weekend and stay warm while you enjoy a rich, delicious beer!
