It was late September last year and I got an unexpected piece of good news about craft beer! Cleveland’s Great Lakes Brewing was going to begin distribution in Maryland!
I first learned of Great Lakes Brewing in 2003 when I was living in the Philadelphia area and found out about their Christmas Ale, an ale that sounded so good that I got a case delivered to my home. And it was a good as it sounded! But I’ll get to that in a minute because Great Lakes Brewing is so much more than just their stellar Christmas Ale.
Great Lakes is one of a handful of long-established craft breweries that have, simply, gotten better over time. After brothers Pat and Dan Conway founded their brewery in 1986 in Cleveland’s Ohio City neighborhood, they focused on sustainability, renovating buildings from the 1800’s to be part of their brewery’s footprint. Over the years, as Great Lakes Brewing Company grew, they developed more and more recipes, including the spectacular Christmas Ale I just mentioned. But beyond that beer—I promise I’ll talk about it in a minute—Great Lakes has an outstanding, well-balanced portfolio of craft beers. Here’s just a sample:
- Elliott Ness Amber Lager, a 6.1% ABV craft beer that has won 12 Gold and Silver medals at the World Beer Championships.
- Hazecraft IPA, brewed with Azacca, Lemondrop and Simcoe hops. This 6.7% ABV beer is excellent!
- Lake Erie Monster Imperial IPA. This 9.5% ABV Imperial India Pale Ale is a monster—it’s monsterously delicious!
And the list goes on. Look for, find, and enjoy Great Lakes Brewing’s beer and treat yourself to an early Christmas present with any of their beers.
Now… speaking of Christmas, I promised to fill you in on Great Lakes Christmas Ale. It’s like Christmas in a bottle. Brewed with honey, cinnamon and ginger, this beer is a pure holiday celebration! The label features a green freight train car filled with red ornaments, immediately pulling you into the season. This is a wonderful, delicious Christmas Ale and a beer that you and your friends will love.
Make your weekend a great one with any of the incredible Great Lakes Brewing beers!
