Part of the magic of the Holiday Season is the time we spend with family and friends. Last Friday, my brother and sister-in-law arrived for a weekend visit, driving from his home just outside Cincinnati to our home in Bel Air. That evening, we had a small Christmas celebration after dinner and… surprise… he gave me a six-pack of craft beer! More on that in a minute…
I, of course, gave him beer as well: a mixed six-pack of Maryland, Delaware and Pennsylvania craft beers, including 60 Minute IPA from Dogfish Head, Perpetual IPA from Troeg’s, Lot No. 3 IPA from Evolution, Loose Cannon IPA from Heavy Seas , The White Russian—a Coffee Cream Ale from Jailbreak Brewing and Dundalk Calling—a Double IPA from Key Brewing.
Now on the six-pack from my brother: it was Thundersnow from Mad Tree Brewing in Cincinnati. I first heard of Mad Tree Brewing last year when Chris Leonard, the Brewmaster and Operations Manager for Heavy Seas, told me about one of Heavy Seas’ Partnerships releases: a collaboration with Mad Tree Brewing. Together Heavy Seas and Mad Tree brewed a style called Wee Heavy—a Scottish Ale—adding coffee from Cincinnati and Baltimore coffee roasters, as well as chocolate made in Cincinnati.
Mad Tree makes some wonderful craft beer, including Thundersnow, a seasonal release. Thundersnow is a spiced Scottish Ale, with notes of ginger, nutmeg, vanilla and cinnamon. It’s dark chestnut brown with a thick creamy light tan head and checks in at 8.5% ABV. It was a perfect Ale for a Holiday night.
If you look around, you can still find bottles of the Heavy Seas partnership with Mad Tree. Look for a 22 ounce bottle with the name Wee Heavy! One sip and you’ll have an idea about just how good Mad Tree is—we all already know how great Heavy Seas is!—and then you’ll know how good my six-pack of Thundersnow tasted!
