Twenty years ago, this month, RavenBeer President and Founder, Stephen Demzcuk brewed the first batch of Raven Special Lager in Baltimore. The recipe for Raven Special Lager was actually developed while Stephen was living in Germany. When he returned to the States, he got together with Heavy Seas Founder, Hugh Sisson at his, then, new brewery in Halethorpe and in 1998, Baltimore got its first taste of Raven Special Lager.
20 years later, Raven Special Lager continues to be the top selling beer from RavenBeer and is now brewed at the RavenBeer/DuClaw brewery on Yellowbrick Road in Rosedale.
To celebrate this 20 th anniversary, RavenBeer is throwing a party at the brewery next
Thursday, June 7 th , from 6pm-10pm. It’s going to be a cool event with music from the
Bergamot String Quartet, Celtic pub-style music from Poe-hemia, artist Kevin “KAL”
Kallaugher talking about his design work on the RavenBeer labels, local author Maureen O’Prey with her new book “Beer in Baltimore” and… beer!
All RavenBeers will be on tap, including some special cask versions and the special release of the 20 th Anniversary Raven Special Lager Premium Edition. Stephen Demczuk and Head Brewer Ernie Igot made some subtle changes to this 20th Anniversary Edition, adding German Noble and Columbus hops and taking out most of the darker malts giving the lager a spicy and herbal aroma and a blonder appearance. The effect is a hoppier lager with a 6.5% ABV, higher than the regular version of Raven Special Lager.
So with thanks to The Beatles…
